The Duke Cancer Center unifies Duke Medicine’s previously dispersed cancer program into a single, state-of-the-art location. Â黨ÐÇ¿Õmv | Tsoi Kobus Design’s design focuses on patients and their families with themes of comfort, compassion, and convenience. Offering “one-stop shopping” for almost all outpatient services, the welcoming and efficient environment also improves care by redefining a “no ownership model†with spaces that encourage collaboration across clinical practices. Details reflect the collegiate gothic style of the Duke campus while ample natural light and arched wood accents that echo the Carolina pines harmonize with the surrounding environment.
The center spans 265,000 SF and includes a separate 15,000-SF renovation. The design accommodates future expansion and integrates clinical practice and support spaces as well as spaces for ongoing research and trials in collaboration with Duke University. Patients and caregivers create community connections and feel respite in resource rooms, a healing garden, and rooftop terrace. Key care components include radiation oncology, four LINACs, a two-room HDR brachytherapy suite, imaging services, and a pharmacy. LEED Gold certification is achieved with efficient systems, a high-performance envelope, and shading strategies that reduce energy use by over 20%.
